Hair of the Dog - (2015) The Siren's Song

Hair of the Dog are a power trio from Edinburgh, Scotland. Sharing a love for classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors to name but a few, Hair of the Dog have forged a sound that is both contemporary and classic.

So, this is my second post in a row highlighting a release from Kozmik Artifactz, a label that seems to be on fire this year. Coming up with some great bands, and adding them to its already pretty incredible roster. This time it's from the Scottish band Hair of the Dog. These guys have been somewhat labeled as a retro 70's band after their first release last year, the self-titled effort (available here). I can hear where the tag is coming from, but there is a lot more than just some retro riffs and the "I've heard it all before" vibe of the genre. There's plenty of fuzz, psychedelic breakdowns and lyrics that deal with things that almost anyone can related to. But there's an old school 80's metal vibe on a couple of the tracks... just below the surface. With double bass drumming and galloping grooves that seem fresh. Keeping you absorbed and interested in what's going on, and curious as to what's in store next.

To me, the band really shines when they lighten up a bit, and give the listener time to chill out. Tracks like "Weary Bones" and the last two tracks (which is really one song split into two), also the title track of the album. The Siren's Song Pt.1 and Pt.2. They really seem to grab my attention, and have a build and release that comes with clever songwriting and competent musical talent. However, I think "The Sirens Song" is best when listened to in its entirety, just like all great albums should be. The Siren's Song will be available to buy on CD/DD from Kozmik Artifactz on July 10th 2015. Highly Recommended. -AW

  1. The title of the album pretty well presupposes the content of it! Rather predictable and expected rhythm along with the content!
